Description
Our tips for the second stage
- Roffla Gorge: A gorge in the Hinterrhein between Andeer-Bärenburg and Sufers.
- Mountain village of Splügen: One of the oldest and most typical pass villages in Graubünden, awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society in 1995.
Stage 2 / Andeer-Splügen
A visit to the gorge is also on the programme for today's stage. It took seven years and 8,000 blasts to open up the Roffla Gorge. At the very back, the rock gallery goes behind the waterfall and thus under the Rhine. After the Roffla Gorge, we reach Sufers, which is mentioned in a list of royal estates in Raetia as early as 831 and is therefore considered the oldest village in the valley. Today's stage stop is the typical pass village of Splügen. We recommend a visit to the interactive relief at the entrance to the Hotel Alte Herberge Weiss Kreuz, where the valley's transport history is impressively documented.
The viaSpluga is a cultural and long-distance hiking trail in the central Alps, which for centuries has linked the people of German-speaking Graubünden, Rhaeto-Romanic, Walser and Lombardy and the two villages of Thusis and Chiavenna. The viaSpluga runs largely along historic mule tracks, many of whose original structures have been preserved or restored. The viaSpluga is around 65 kilometres long in total.
Walk comfortably from accommodation to accommodation and benefit from the luggage transport included in the price. The tours can also be made easier by public transport.
Geheimtipp
Two Hinterrhein power station reservoirs line your route today. Information boards provide details about the entire system. Take the time to discover the history of the Roffla gorge and, depending on the day of the week, the fortress museum in Crestawald is open. Splügen is also one of the oldest and most typical pass villages in Graubünden! The Rheinwald local history museum in Splügen impressively documents the valley's transport history (please note the opening times).
Sicherheitshinweis
The viaSpluga is a mountain hiking trail. Surefootedness and a head for heights are required on some sections (bridges, Cardinello gorge).
Ausrüstung
Directions
The viaSpluga is marked throughout from Thusis to Chiavenna as regional hiking trail No. 50, as well as with brown viaSpluga signposts.
Stage 2: Andeer - Splügen: From the southern end of the village in Andeer, you hike to the Roffla gorge (visit possible). An intelligently laid out path leads you through the rough terrain towards the light valley floor of the Rheinwald forest, past the Crestawald military-historical fortress museum to Sufers. The forest passage between Sufers and Splügen on the so-called Roman Trail offers a magnificent conclusion to the second stage.
