Description
We hike to the valley station of the Vättner mountain railway, which was built in 1931 by the Vättis Alpine Corporation. From here you can easily reach the Vättnerberg by gondola. But we follow the hiking trail out of the valley, cross the Radeinbach and climb through beautiful forests and over lush alpine meadows up to the Vättnerberg. We are rewarded with a great view: the Calanda presents itself from its most beautiful side, on its left to the east the view sweeps to Austria and the Silvretta area, to the south over the Kunkelspass with the peaks behind it.
We hike along the alpine road to the Tritt. Like other settlements in this area, the farmsteads on the Vättnerberg belong to a former Walser settlement. We turn off to the Radeintobel, then our path climbs again to Alp Ladils. Here you have a beautiful view of the famous Drachenloch and the Ringelspitz behind it, the highest mountain in St.Gallen. In summer, Alp Ladils is managed. We follow the path to the south, down to Vättis. With a bit of luck, you can observe animals here. This narrow, sometimes steep and rocky path was once used to bring the cheese from Alp Ladils down to the valley on wooden sledges. At the avalanche barrier in the Kreuzbach ravine is the geologically interesting Vättner window. This is where primeval rock comes to light, a rare phenomenon. Before we make our way home, it's worth visiting the Dragon Hole Museum.
