Description

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death in 2016, the Fondazione Centro Giacometti is paying tribute to Alberto Giacometti with a detailed photo documentary "I understand neither life nor death". For this, 44 high-quality photographs of Giacometti's last stays in Stampa and of the funeral have been selected, several of which have never been published before. They show Alberto Giacometti as a person of the Bergell, at home in Stampa, who found his final resting place in this Grisons valley in January 1966. The photo documentation is supplemented by a few short texts on Giacometti's biography. Selected obituaries bear witness to the importance of Alberto Giacometti at the time of his death.

The reader thus receives a photographic impression of the last years of the artist's life in Bergell and at the same time can take a walk between Coltura and Borgonovo to the original places. The conception of the publication does justice to the claim of an artist's documentation and at the same time a guide. Thanks to an enclosed map, it is possible to find the exact photo locations. The selected images trace the path from Coltura to Giacometti's home in Stampa and on to the San Giorgio cemetery in Borgonovo, where Giacometti was buried on 15 January 1966.
