Description

Lake Toma, the source of the Rhine, is a special place. The wandering Benedictine monk from the Disentis monastery, Father Placidus A. Spescha (1752 - 1833), mentioned the place in his description of the Tavetscher Valley as follows: "This lake, 200 steps wide and 400 steps long, is the basin from which the Anterior Rhine takes its origin. It is a beautiful area and thus worthy of being the original source of such a river".

Geheimtipp

In July, alpine roses and sweet-smelling martagon lilies bloom along the edge of the trail.

Overnight guests with a guest card can travel by train between Disentis and the Oberalp Pass free of charge.

Sicherheitshinweis

The hike can only be done from approximately mid-June. However, until the end of June occasional fields of snow may still be found in the upper part of the trail. Inexperienced hikers should calculate an additional hour of hiking time.

The trek cannot be undertaken with a pram or by bike.

There is no place for meals or refreshments at the lake.

Ausrüstung

Hiking equipment is recommended.

Directions

The hiking trail is signposted white-red: Mountain hiking trail, trekking scale, T2.

At the beginning of the tour, we hike along the pass road downhill for 10 minutes. We cross a small stream and now follow the high trail southwards into Val Maighels. At point 2056 we turn right and zigzag upwards. At first we hike over alpine meadows, a little later the path becomes steeper and stony. As soon as we have passed the last hairpin bends, we reach the lake. The way back follows the same route.
