The mighty stone house with the tower above the entrance is located in the village center next to the main street. The famous governor Casper de Latour-Scarpatetti (1862-1949) had it built between 1895 and 1898.
Description
From the 17th to the 19th century, the de Latour family was one of the most important families in the Surselva. As officers in foreign service, especially in France, they made international history. Caspar Theodosius de Latour (1782-1855) went the furthest. As a general, he commanded the papal troops in northern Italy. As trained lawyers, the de Latour family also made a career in politics and played a key role in shaping events in the municipality of Brigels, the Grey Confederation, the Republic of the Three Leagues and the later canton of Graubünden for four centuries. During this time, their ancestral seat was always in Brigels.
The Latour family archive and museum
In his will, the man who built the house stipulated that the cultural assets and the family archive were to be maintained and preserved as an undistributed inheritance by the respective owners of the Latour house as cultural and historical landmarks.
And so the descendants - on the initiative of granddaughter Rita Theus-Bieler and her husband Valentin Theus-Bieler - have set up a small family archive and museum. Book a guided tour and gain an insight into the family history and the life of the de Latour family. On display are the gala uniforms and swords worn by the officers of the Latour family at the court of the French kings around 1780/90. Many portraits with their stories adorn the walls and the display cabinets contain toys, books, awards and other souvenirs from Casa Latour. Of course, you will also learn how the de Latours shaped the village and how the de Latours shaped and influenced life in the mountain village of Breil/Brigels.
