History of the church
The church of Pitasch was founded between around 840 and 960, as it does not yet appear in the Carolingian Urbarium. In 960, however, it appears as a royal church and is transferred by Otto I together with the Riein church to the Bishop of Chur in exchange. We learn of the patron saint of St. Martin in 1487. The present structure is essentially a work of the 12th century.
Description of the building
The north-facing Romanesque building consists of a rectangular nave and a semi-circular, vaulted apse. This is the only Romanesque apse structure with columns in our area, built around the middle of the 12th century. The tower stands on the west front; it does not date from the Romanesque period and is probably post-medieval, as the old belfry built into the west gable can still be seen in the roof space of the nave.
Wall Paintings
During renovation work in 1921, paintings were discovered but later painted over again. They depict the twelve apostles.
Furnishings
Massive baptismal font from the 15th century. Polygonal pulpit from 1686.Communion vessels: zinc chalice and hexagonal screw-top jug.Bells from 1764 and 1861, with inscriptions.
