Description
The original viaduct was built - with interruptions - in the years 1913 -1925 and put into operation in 1926 by the Furka-Oberalp Railway. It is 120 m long and spans the Val Bugnei with nine arches. The masonry is 3.13 m wide and a maximum of 24.20 m high. Between 2000 and 2001 it was carefully restored. Cement injections were used to strengthen the monolytic masonry. The new mortar joints are the same as the original ones. The entire railway system had to be replaced. In addition, a footbridge has been added.
Tip for amateur photographers: Wait for a Glacier Express train to cross the bridge. There are also beautiful pictures when the viaduct is illuminated with changing colors in winter.
