Traversinersteg
Spanning the largest and wildest ravine between Sils i.D. and the Viamala Gorge is a bridge unlike any other: The Traversiner footbridge by world-famous bridge builder Jürg Conzett is a masterpiece of engineering.

Description

The aim of the Viamala Cultural Area Association is to bring the cultural and historical treasures around the Viamala to life. The backbone of this plan is the restored Roman path 'Veia Traversina', which runs from Sils via Hohenrätien and St. Albin to the centre of the gorge. This marvellously laid out path leads over numerous ravines, some of which are crossed and some of which are spanned by bridges.

The largest and wildest of these ravines has been spanned by Traversinersteg II since 2005. The second Traversinersteg was built in 2005 and replaces the first Traversinersteg built in 1996, which stood further back in the ravine and was destroyed by a rockfall. The bridge is designed as a prestressed cable truss with natural pylons and an inclined walkway, a suspended staircase with a horizontal span of 56 metres and a height difference of 22 metres. The well-being of the hikers and their subjective feeling of safety with regard to the view and vibrations on the staircase suspended 70 metres above the stream bed was a decisive planning task.

External beams prevent the vertical view into the ravine and horizontally arranged railing boards support the visual protection. The rough-sawn surfaces of the pinewood steps of the walkway, which curves downwards with a radius of 150 metres, ensure slip resistance. A rhombic framework with double braces, the high rigidity of the glulam beams made of larch wood and the pre-tensioning of the main cables limit the swinging and swaying of the walkway to an acceptable level. The Traversinersteg II is part of the viaSpluga long-distance hiking trail and can only be reached on foot.
