Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904)String Quartet No. 12 in F major («American»), op. 96 for string orchestra (1893)

Concert duration: approx. 60 minutes

Astor Piazzolla found his destiny as the founder and great master of "Tango Nuevo" through his studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. It convinced the bandoneon player and composer that his language was much less to be heard in symphonies and sonatas, but in the tangos of his homeland. Back in Buenos Aires, Piazzolla created an important contemporary art form from the once ridiculed music of the dodgy nightclubs, which he enriched with classical harmony, refined instrumentation and influences from jazz and baroque music. The Baroque models, in this case Antonio Vivaldi, are evident in the "Cuatro Estaciones". Piazzolla describes life in the Argentine capital over the course of the seasons almost programmatically. Rich in contrast and colourful, he sets to music more wintry loneliness and summer passion, virtuosity and torpor, and thus paints a poignant picture of the soul of Buenos Aires.

On the same double continent, but 10,000 kilometres further north, Antonín Dvořák created his 12th String Quartet in F major in 1893. After the famous 9th Symphony ("From the New World"), it was the second composition that the Bohemian composer completed on American soil. Accordingly, the quartet exhibits similar "American" stylistic characteristics such as pentatonic harmony.

After the concert, the KulturBus will take you free of charge to Scuol, Ftan, Ardez and Tarasp. Register at the box office.
