Explora Live Report

Tobias Schorcht quits his teaching job and sets off on a 3,000 km solo crossing of Patagonia. It takes eight months to reach Tierra del Fuego. On the way, he fights his way through jungles, avoids crevasses on the Patagonian ice field, lets locals show him the basics of self-sufficiency and suddenly comes face to face with an adult puma. It's THE wilderness adventure of this Explora season.

A deep longing for freedom draws Tobias Schorcht to the Patagonian Andes. But it takes a while for him to get used to the harsh nature – instead of finding enlightenment, he is stuck mainly in the undergrowth. On foot, he fights his way through pathless terrain, gets caught in a hurricane-like storm, crosses countless mountain passes, paddles through marble caves with his packraft and drifts down picturesque rivers.

Despite the seclusion, he is not alone. A self-sufficient woman takes him in for three weeks, and he returns the favor by chopping wood and milking cows. On a small island, he enters the life of a family that has been living there in seclusion for generations. In the fjords he fishes for trout and meets dolphins and seals, while in the Argentine pampas the llamas graze.

Tobias Schorcht can cover almost the entire distance from Puerto Montt in the north to the Strait of Magellan in the south under his own steam. He is only five kilometers short, caused by a delicate rescue operation that almost meant the premature end of his adventure.
