Chapels and churches im Tujetsch

The churches and chapels in the valley are lined up like pearls and each place of worship has its own story.

Camischolas: Sontga Onna Chapel (key, Venanzi Cavegn, Tel. 081 949 13 35)

The first chapel in Camischolas was built around 1515. The very beautiful and valuable Gothic altar dates from 1517. Father Placidus A. Spescha, the wandering monk from the Disentis monastery, spent the time between 1812 and 1815 in Sedrun and described the small church as follows: "The external structure of the church is unsightly , the interior decoration but excellent as far as the altars are concerned, very pleasant"

Zarcuns: Nossadunna Chapel (key, Vigeli Schmid Tel. 081 949 15 70

According to legend, the Holy Mother of God appeared to a pious man named Gionet in 1622, and the chapel was built in the same year. It is decorated with paintings showing scenes from the life of Our Lady. The church tower is decorated with a crescent moon, which also has significance in the Christian religion. There is a passage in the Book of Revelation that describes the celestial apparition of a woman: "Then a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun; the moon was under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her Main"

Rueras: Sogn Giachen Church (open daily)

There was already a chapel in Rueras in 1491; the current church was built in 1730. It was spared from two serious avalanches in 1749 and 1817. The residents of Rueras used to go to Sedrun for holy days and holidays. Fair. In 1965 the request to be allowed to celebrate all church festivals and holidays in Rueras was granted.

Giuv: Chapel Sogn Bastgaun (key, Imelda Monn Tel. 081 949 14 48)

In 1768 Giuv was still inhabited by 22 people in five houses. When an avalanche on Christmas Day in 1836 buried seven barns and their livestock and claimed five lives, the chapel remained undamaged. It is not documented anywhere. Based on its shape, it was probably built in the 17th century. The painting in the gable depicts St. Nepomuk. There is another painting on the front of the altar table. It shows the martyrdom of St. Sebastian. Next to the Tiber River near Rome, St. Sebastian killed by tormentors with arrows. Next to them are the fishermen at work and the townspeople out for a walk.

Tschamut: Chapel Sogn Nicolaus (key, Hotel Rheinquelle Tel. 081 949 11 12

The chapel was probably built around 1500 at the latest by the Disentis Monastery, which owned various estates and Alps in the area. Tschamut had its own rights and usage rights until the middle of the 19th century and was probably initially a hospice. The tower stands on the edge of the roof gable and is therefore similar to those of other hospices. The ceiling of the chapel is very interesting and valuable. It was built at the end of the Gothic era. The multifaceted rosette in the middle is a carving in the shape of a fish. It is framed by coats of arms and probably also house symbols.

After the fire of 1949, in which the entire village burned down except for a single house, the new church was built in 1952 by Bishop Christianus Caminada in honor of St. Apostles John and Paul as well as the high altar in honor of St. Anna and St. Dedicated to Joseph and John the Baptist. The first chapel in Selva was inaugurated in 1630 by Bishop Giusep Mohr of Chur. It had three altars and was dedicated to the Evangelist John, Saints Paul and Valentine.

Surrein: Chapel Sogn Antoni (key: Jovita Loretz Tel. 081 949 14 21)

In 1679 the residents of Surrein received permission in honor of St. Antoius of Padua to build a chapel. The painting in the middle depicts St. Anthony during his miraculous sermon to the fish.

Sedrun: Sogn Vigeli Church (open daily)

The first church was built around 1205, which was further into the valley towards the Drun. From the choir you could get directly into the church tower. The huge tower, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century, still bears witness to this today. It cannot be determined whether there was already a chapel or a church in Sedrun beforehand. Tradition tells us that the people of Tujetsch brought the stones for the tower from Plidettas near Burganets, Val Nalps. You can find stones like that there. In 1691, construction began on a new church, which was renovated and changed several times over time.

Variant: Take the tour in two stages and take the train to Chamut. Once you hike via Selva to Sedrun and a second time via Milez. 

We walk on the pavement in a westerly direction along the main road to Camischolas. Continue on the main road to Zarcuns. From here a natural road leads, parallel to the main road, to Rueras. We cross the main road and follow Via Vitg to the village center of Rueras to the church. After the church, this road leads back up to the main road, which we cross a second time. An almost traffic-free paved road now leads up to Giuv. The chapel is located a few steps below the road. Continue to the Berghaus Planatsch. Here we walk towards Selva on a road below the building to Alp Caspausa. On a meadow path we reach the edge of the forest. Now we turn right into the forest and cross the "Uaul da roses" on a very beautiful hiking trail. We reach another road, follow it to the railway station Tschamut and immediately down to the pass road. We walk about 200 meters along the road until we see the chapel on the left. On the opposite side of the chapel we find the signpost for the hiking trail to Selva. The path leads through a meadow down to the golf course, later through the golf course to the village. Here we pay attention to the hiking signposts. We turn right and cross the Rhine. At the beginning we hike a bit on a road, later on a wide hiking trail over meadows and through forests. We reach a paved traffic-free road. We follow this, always in the same direction, to the power plant. We leave the power plant on the left and the road rises a little. As soon as we reach the end of the forest, we turn left in front of the first houses of Surrein onto a hiking trail where we find the chapel of S. Antoni. After the chapel we cross the road again and walk straight through the village. In front of us on the right we see the Lag da Claus. At the bridge we turn left to Sedrun. Finally, we visit the village church.
