Description
The starting point in Davos runs along the Landwasser Valley as far as Thusis. Passing idyllic Walser settlements, until 1974 road traffic only used the road at the bottom of the Zügen Gorge, which was often prone to avalanches in winter. A highlight is the famous Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway, one of the most famous structures and one of the most photographed sights in Graubünden. Another highlight shortly after Thusis is the Viamala Gorge, a unique natural experience. It was once hated, in Rhaeto-Romanic Viamala = "bad path", as the old muleteers called the wild, deep Viamala Gorge through which the Hinterrhein roars. Today, people travel there precisely because of the spectacular world of water and cliffs up to 300 meters high. The route winds its way up the mountains to the San Bernardino Pass, from where you can already feel the southern flair. In Bellinzona, things get really summery, as the capital of the Ticino canton represents Italian-speaking Switzerland. A stop here is not only worthwhile for a coffee, but also to visit the Bellinzona fortress, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The road continues via the north-south connection over the Lukmanier Pass to Disentis. From there, the route follows the Grisons Oberland through the natural spectacle of the Rhine Gorge - the Grand Canyon of Switzerland - via Versam to Bondauz, Chur and Landquart, from where it heads back to Davos through the Prättigau.
