The varied circular hike to Lej Sgrischus and Piz Chüern is the perfect opportunity to explore the magical Fex Valley. The mountain hike is technically not too difficult, but due to the duration (approx. 5:30 hours and not 4 hours as indicated by Engadin Tourismus) and the altitude difference to be covered, a good level of fitness is required.

The tour starts in the village of Sils Maria. The first part of the ascent is in the forest. We soon arrive at the first view point “Marmoré”. Here we enjoy a beautiful view over the end of the Fex Valley and Lake Sils. We continue to ascend and the emerging fog creates a mystical atmosphere. Fortunately, it soon clears again and we can enjoy the beautiful view on the now flatter section along the eastern flank of the valley. The ascent to Lej Sgrischus requires good stamina. We take a short break at the lake and then climb up to Piz Chüern, the culmination point of the hike. From here you get a great view of Val Fex and the surrounding mountains.

On the way back, we descend into the valley and treat ourselves to a delicious slice of apricot cake in one of the restaurants before making our way back to Sils.

Safety and behavioral information

  • Mountain hiking is not a walk in the park. Surefootedness, no fear of heights and a good level of fitness are prerequisites for safe mountain hiking. More information at www.nps.gov/articles/hiking-safety.htm
  • Plan your hike carefully and inform yourself in advance about the current trail conditions, any snow fields, technically challenging passages, the weather, and alternative routes in case you have to turn around. Consider carefully if your hiking skills are sufficient for the chosen route.
  • Hiking boots with a good tread, enough to eat and drink, protection from sun and rain, offline maps as well as a comprehensive emergency kit belong to every hike.
  • Leave no trace: don't leave any traces in nature: take your trash back with you, don't pick flowers and stay on the trail. www.lnt.org
  • Respect the Wildlife: Do not feed or touch any animals and keep enough distance.
