Description

The 5th section of the Glacier Bike Tour begins flat through a picturesque forest along the Vorderrhein and the railway tracks. The views become increasingly impressive and from the Zault vantage point, the full grandeur of the Rhine Gorge finally reveals itself.

Before entering the Safiental valley, the route crosses the old Versamertobel bridge. From Valendas, the route climbs steadily from 800 metres to 1,600 metres!

Finally, the view opens up into Val Lumnezia, the largest side valley of the Surselva. After the farming settlement of Ober Dutjen, the route descends via Riein and Sevgein to Ilanz.

Ilanz is the first town on the Rhine and is known as the "gateway to the Rhine Gorge". It lies in a wide, fertile hollow that was once the bottom of the lake dammed by the landslide. You can take a lovely stroll through the pretty old town centre, which is just beginning to blossom. Sights include the Obertor, Casa Gronda and Casa Carniec, which is home to the Regiunal Surselva Folklore Museum.

Geheimtipp

Valendas with its patrician houses, where you can fill up your bottle at the 8 metre-long fountain. Coffee and cake are also available here.

Sicherheitshinweis

On the way to Riein, turn left at Galogn/Muntschalls onto trail 259, which is a very narrow, beautiful forest and meadow trail - but if you have a lot of luggage with you or feel safer on tarmac, simply continue along the road.

Ausrüstung

Which e-bike should I use to start the Glacier Bike Tour? Professional biker (and e-MTB double world champion) Nathalie Schneitter presents the perfect bike here in the video: a robust & comfortable fully, equipped with wide, grippy tires, powerful brakes and, if possible, with a dropper post.

Even in the middle of summer, you have to be prepared for everything in the mountains: So what do you pack in your bike bags for such a special undertaking that leads over 3 passes, through high alpine as well as Mediterranean landscapes? Bike pro Nathalie Schneitter has already ridden the Glacier Bike Tour and tells us her packing list here.

Directions

Public Transport

The Glacier Bike Tour runs continuously along the Glacier Express with 53 stations - so you can also use the regional trains in between if necessary.
