The 6000 km long European Kolumban Trail leads through nine countries. From Ireland via England, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Principality of Liechtenstein to Italy. The Kolumbansweg follows the traces of the Irish monks Kolumban († 615) and Gallus († around 640/645) as well as their companions. From the late 6th century onwards, they and their successors gave significant impetus to Christianity and thus to culture on the European mainland. Around a hundred monasteries are associated with Kolumban and his students. In addition to returning to the cultural, spiritual and monastic heritage, it also stands for a message of peace and cohesion in Europe.

Description

The Swiss part of the international cultural route "Via Columbani" comprises 21 stages and 500 km from Basel to Castasegna near Chiavenna. The Columbanian Trail Switzerland leads on well-developed hiking trails and cycle routes through picturesque landscapes such as Fricktal, Limmattal, Toggenburg, Fürstenland, Rheintal, Sarganserland and Albula, along rivers such as the Rhine, Aare and Limmat and lakes such as Lake Zurich and Lake Constance and through many historic places with spiritual power. The Swiss Cultural Trail has also included naturopathic medicine, which has been produced by the monasteries since the early Middle Ages. Switzerland as a country of health - www.gesundheitsland.ch - connects its stakeholders and makes the diverse possibilities for natural health care in Switzerland visible and tangible.
