Palfries mountain station - Gonzen mountain guesthouse - Lanaberg - Sargans

We start the hike at the Palfries mountain station. With the Palfriesbahn, we have previously overcome around 1,250 metres in altitude in just 12 minutes. The train travels over an impressive waterfall (Ragnatscher Bach) and takes us up to the Palfries plateau.
Arriving at the mountain station, we follow the path towards the mountain summit of Gonzen, but then branch off before the opposite ascent. After three quarters of an hour we meet the mountain inn Gonzen, where we can enjoy a magnificent view of the Rhine valley in front of us as well as the near and wide mountains of Vorarlberg, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Grisons.  This is followed by a steep, but not difficult, descent to the Lanaberg, which leads over pastures and meadows. We then continue on the dirt road (partly paved) to Sargans.

Take a detour to the Gonzen and enjoy the view of the St. Gallen and Chur Rhine Valley, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Sargans Plain.

We start the hike from the Palfries mountain station in a southeasterly direction over the Chamm. Then we leave the asphalted alpine road and take the path towards Alp Riet (Rieterhütte). The slightly sloping hiking trail leads at the beginning through wetlands, some of which are spanned by "wooden bridges", and then over alpine pastures to the mentioned Rieter huts. There we hike about 700 meters on the road downhill, where we then turn right into the mountain path. Soon we arrive at the mountain inn Gonzen and continue on unpaved road, meadows and pastures. At Lanaberg, the mountain path joins the natural road (Rheintal-Höhenweg). We follow this in a southerly direction. After a march of about 3 km, the road joins the asphalted access road to Oberprod. This is to follow briefly downhill, then use the shortcut over an alley. We cross the aforementioned access road twice. Shortly before or above Sargans Castle we take the path to the left and then it goes more or less straight ahead - leaving the castle on the right - to the center and traffic junction of Sargans. From here we have another 10 minutes to the train station.
