Description
The small mountain village is characterized by its location on the Splügen Pass and the San Bernardino: large, Italian-style palazzi stand in Splügen right next to the sun-browned wooden houses of the Walser people. The old Grisons pass village was awarded the Wakker Prize by the Swiss Heritage Society for its historic village center.
The valley trail starts at the cross-country skiing center on the edge of the village. Shortly after the start, you cross a bridge. The trail then follows the banks of the Hinterrhein, alternating between sparse forest and wide open spaces. The view of the Rheinwald mountains - including Guggernüll, Einshorn and Chilchalphorn - enriches the route to Nufenen and back again.
Cross-country skiing fun would almost not have been possible here: At the time of the Second World War, there were plans to submerge the village of Splügen in the waters of a mighty reservoir. Fortunately, the militant population of the Rheinwald successfully resisted the construction project. Otherwise, Grisons mountain cheese would probably not have been developed in Nufenen in the 1950s. A lot has happened since then: The cheese is known far and wide and in the cellar of the alpine dairy cooperative, Robot Charlie has been diligently helping to care for over 12,000 wheels of cheese for several years.
