Runchett da Sotsassa

Poschiavo is located about 1000 meters above sea level. However, thanks to its southern exposure and relatively mild climate, there are favorable conditions for the cultivation of fruit and vegetables – a completely different situation from that of the nearby Engadine, which was supplied with fresh products from Valposchiavo until the Second World War. For this purpose, the slopes of the valley were terraced to obtain land dedicated to the cultivation of vegetables. Today, the former gardens have disappeared. In some places the forest has regained the land, but at times the terraces have remained clearly visible. Among these, the terraces of the Runchett da Sotsassa have remained particularly intact. The viewpoint is located a hundred meters above the valley floor, and offers a splendid view of the village and the surrounding mountains. In two relatively flat spots, wooden benches invite you to linger and enjoy the view.

The hike is marked as a mountain trail (white – red – white, difficulty level T3). The starting point of this circular excursion is the Poschiavo railway station. Crossing the town, you reach the northern part of the old town. From here there is a narrow uphill path through the forest to the Ronchett da Sotsassa.

Despite the proximity to the historic center, the route should not be underestimated: the area is partially exposed; An almost vertical channel is crossed by a covered bridge made of wood, another exposed area is fixed to the slope with chains. The excursion is where it began, at the Poschiavo train station.
