Tageswanderung Aeugstenhütte - Murgseen - Merlen

With the Aeugstenbahn from Ennenda/GL you drive a good 1000 meters into the air and can lace up your mountain boots at the Bärenboden. In the nearby Aeugstenhütte (1500 m.a.s.l.) there is still a stop before the ascent really starts. The trail now leads steeply uphill through changing vegetation levels to the Rotärd Pass. Nomen est Omen, the earth is red. The underlying rock is red clay shale from the Triassic period. This was deposited millions of years ago under a tropical climate. Along the Wisschamm we head towards Schwarzstöckli, the highest point of the hike (2346 m above sea level). An easy descent leads to the Murgseefurggel crossing, a wonderful place for a rest. The view of the mountains and the two upper Murg lakes is worth a jolt!

The idyllically situated mountain inn Murgsee (1825 m above sea level) on the Upper Murgsee is quickly reached. The 'Hütte' has an eventful history that goes back to the times of ore mining. Later it was the 'bivouac' of the Murg sea fishermen, who procured fresh food for the first spa guests of the region. Today you can fish at the upper two lakes yourself (solve patent in the hut). On a steep alpine path you walk downhill, past the Lower Murgsee with the Murgbach Falls and ancient Swiss stone pine trees. A feast for the eyes! After almost two hours of hiking, Merlen (1100 m.a.s.l.) is reached, where you can be picked up by the previously reserved taxi.

Variant for two-day tour:

Spend the night in the Murgseehütte and the other day in 4.5 hours via Sardona World Heritage Trail No. 73 to the mountain restaurant Talalpsee and to Habergschwänd, descent with the Kerenzerbergbahnen to Filzbach.

Variant for two- or three-day tour:

Spend the night in the Murgseehütte and in 5.5 hours to the SAC-Spitzmeilenhütte. Then, for example, in 2 hours to the Flumserbergbahn mountain station Maschgenkamm or the other day on the Sardona World Heritage Trail No. 73 on to Weisstannen.
