Description
This route follows the original route of the transviamala walking through the legendary Viamala Gorge. From the starting point in Thusis, the route leads on the old commercial road from 1820 through the Verlorene Loch to Rongellen. At the height of the spectacular Traversinersteg, the course changes sides of the Rhine and leads over a technically demanding single trail to the Viamala Visitor Centre. Directly next to the staircase that leads down to the Rhine is the Wildener Bridge, which once made the dreaded Viamala route accessible to carriages.
The trail leads further south and down to the Rhine, where a filigree suspension bridge made of stainless steel and natural stone, the Punt da Suransuns, leads over the young Rhine. The route runs through a fairytale forest to the hill of Cultira Davora near Reischen, where there is a magnificent view of the open Schamsertal. Via Reischen and Zillis it goes over varied paths to Pignia and down to Pignia Bad. The Rhine side is changed again and after Clugin and the ascent to Plans, another architectural sight follows shortly before the finish in Donat, the Valtschiel Bridge, an early structure by the well-known bridge builder Robert Maillard. You can take the PostBus back to Zillis and Thusis.
