Pass dal Sett

Already known in Roman times, the pass took on considerable importance in the Middle Ages when it was used by traders, wayfarers and pilgrims travelling from Chur to Chiavenna and vice versa. In 1378 the Bregaglia knight Giacomo De Castelmur was commissioned to reconstruct the route to allow the passage of carts and the well-preserved (or reconstructed) cobblestones can still be seen in several parts of the itinerary. The use of other routes over the Alpine passes led to competition, which penalised the Septimerpass. Finally, the construction of the Julierpass road between 1820 and 1826 brought this pass into oblivion. From an excursion point of view, the Septimer Pass crossing remains a very interesting itinerary, as it is an easy route that winds its way through relaxing pastures and, more than any other car pass, maintains the typical atmosphere of the ancient routes through the Alpine chain.

The Via Sett can be booked as a multi-stage package

From Casaccia - car park near the cemetery - follow the dirt road that climbs the wooded step that marks the entrance to Val Maroz. It is best to follow the path, which takes a more direct route, repeatedly crossing the road, with which it joins in the final stretch that enters the valley. Without reaching the nearby arched bridge and the cottages of Maroz Dora (1799m), leave the road and turn onto the path that rises gradually up the slope to the right. A beautiful winding path makes it easy to cross the grassy bank near the "Aua dal Sett" waterfall. In the upper section, the mule track enters a flat little valley and crosses the stream for the first time. Not far away, you reach the "Sascel Battü" (2073m), a small gorge in the path where the oldest and medieval tracks can be identified. Continue along the path without deviating from the course of the stream, which is crossed twice more: the first time on a small arched bridge - pleasant although it has been rebuilt - and the second time on a footbridge that just before the junction with a small road. Walk along this track to reach a nearby building and then the wide saddle of the Pass da Sett (2310m). At this point, several paths converge: to the right, the itinerary to the Pass Lunghin climbs up, which connects with Maloja; to the left, the itinerary to the Passo della Forcellina branches off, allowing you to cross to Juf in Val d'Avers. Our itinerary continues directly along the little road that crosses vast expanses of meadowland and in this way, the long, flat valley is crossed. Without straying too far from the course of the stream at the bottom of the valley, which is crossed on several occasions, we pass the houses of the "Tgavretscha", which are also inhabited in winter. which are also inhabited in winter. Finally, after a last grassy rise, you come to the houses of Tua, which precede the arrival at Bivio, where you join the Passo del Giulia road. The return journey can be made by post bus to Silvaplana, then on into the Engadin towards Maloja and Casaccia
