Trail Running - San Romerio
Show all 6 images
An ascent in the fresh mountain forest leads to the highlight of the tour: the Alp San Romerio at 1,800 metres above sea level with its Romanesque church on a cliff-like ledge. After a rest at the Rifugio San Romerio, a steep downhill of 800 meters in altitude follows to Lago di Poschiavo.

Description
The route follows the well-developed hiking trail of the mule route no. 30 Via Valtellina to San Romerio. Behind the hospital of Poschiavo begins an easy ascent on agricultural roads, which then becomes visibly steep on hiking trails with roots and stones. Between the trees, there are always views of Lake Poschiavo and the mountains opposite, which form the border with Italy.
After the culmination point at 1848 metres above sea level, the hiking trail runs gently on a soft coniferous ground to the hamlet of San Romerio, where at the end of the mountain forest the view suddenly opens up into the lower Valposchiavo and the neighbouring Valtellina. A look to the rear allows a unique view towards the Bernina Pass.
At Ristoro San Romerio, you can fortify yourself with drinks and local food before tackling the steep downhill through spruce and larch forests. The foresters have done a great job here and repaired the path, which was destroyed by storm damage, with a new, sometimes very steep route. Here it is important to stay fully concentrated, as roots and stones are hidden under the foliage, especially in spring and autumn.
Once at sea level, the return to Poschiavo follows the lakeshore and then the Poschiavino River on route no. 33 Via Albula/Bernina. If you are not afraid of cold water, you can take a refreshing dip in Le Prese as a reward.
